  • Samsung could gradually remove in-box chargers and earphones from future phones.
  • The company cites sustainability concerns for its latest move.

The Samsung Galaxy S21 flagships won’t ship with chargers or earphones in the box. Just like Apple, Samsung has also cited environmental concerns for its decision to remove these accessories. Now, it looks like the company won’t stop at the Galaxy S21 series when it comes to lighter packaging.

Samsung has published a set of FAQs about the new phones and in them, it hints at its future plans regarding in-box accessories:

We believe that the gradual removal of charger plugs and earphones from our in-box device packaging can help address sustainable consumption issues and remove any pressure that consumers may feel towards continually receiving unnecessary charger accessories with new phones.

Samsung goes on to say that it’s been implementing USB-C charging ports on its phones since 2017, so older chargers can still be compatible with the latest Galaxy models.

It’s unclear whether Samsung means it’ll gradually remove chargers and earphones from all of its smartphones or if this’ll remain a decision for its S series flagships.

The brand’s Galaxy A, M, and F series devices target budget buyers, and all those models at least bundle a charging adapter, if not earphones. Customers who buy them might not want to pay extra for a charger. Conversely, those who shell out around $2,000 for a Samsung foldable phone might also get irked at not getting a charger in the box for that much money.

Nevertheless, Samsung has left things open-ended for now and could change its plans for future phones depending on how customers react to its charger-less Galaxy S21 boxes this year.
