Disney Plus is going back to the Premier Access business model for its next major animated movie. At its investor meeting today, the company announced that Disney Plus will add Raya and the Last Dragon on March 5, 2021. It will also be released in theaters where they are open.
Like the live-action movie Mulan, Raya and the Last Dragon will be offered on Disney Plus via an extra Premier Access fee, beyond the normal monthly fee. There’s no word what the fee will be for Raya.
The movie itself is set in a fictional ancient Asian country called Kumandra. It centers on Raya, voiced by Kelly Marie Tran, who is trying to find the last remaining dragon to help defend her people against attacking monsters.
As with Mulan, the decision to add Raya to Disney Plus is due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, which is keeping many people from going to theaters. It’s likely that Raya will be available for all Disney Plus subscribers at no additional cost a few months after its debut via Premier Access.
Disney also announced that in the next few years, we can expect to see 10 new Marvel TV shows, 10 new Star Wars shows, 15 Disney and Pixar shows, and 15 Disney and Pixar feature films to make their debut on Disney Plus. We will likely learn more about those plans later today during the Disney investor day presentation.
